The Virginia Quarterly Review (VQR)

DESCRIPTION: VQR strives to publish the best writing we can find. While we have a long history of publishing accomplished and award-winning authors, we also seek and support emerging writers.VQR’s Website.

The Virginia Quarterly Review publishes Poetry, Short Fiction (generally NOT genre fiction) and Nonfiction (“In general, we are looking for nonfiction that looks out on the world, rather than within the self.”) See website for further details.

WORD LIMIT: Poetry: All lengths. Short Fiction: 3,500-8,000 words. Nonfiction: 3,500-9,000 words.

PAY RATE: Poetry: $200.00 / poem up to 4 poems. $1,000 for 5 or more poems (generally speaking).  Short Fiction $1,000.00 and above. Other Prose: $1,000.00 and up, approx. $00.25/word (although this may vary, see website for details).

SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS: Yes (But as always, let them know ASAP if your work is accepted elsewhere.)

READING PERIOD: July 1-31.

The Threepenny Review

DESCRIPTION: The Threepenny Review is a well-regarded journal of the arts and society which has been published since 1980. Every issue contains excellent essays, stories, poems, and memoirs, plus beautiful black-and-white photographs. Its regular writers include six Nobel Prizewinners and four U.S. Poet Laureates; recent issues featured writing by Wendell Berry, Geoff Dyer, Louise Glück, Greil Marcus, Javier Marías, Adam Phillips, and Kay Ryan. – Duotrope Description.

WORD LIMIT: Articles 1,200 – 2,500 words. Table Talk 1,000 words or less. Stories or Memoirs 4,000 words or less. Poetry 100 lines or less.

PAY RATE: $400.00 / story or article. $200.00 / poem or “Table Talk” piece.
