I want to give my fellow writers a heads up that Hippocampus Magazine and Midnight & Indigo are both open for short story submissions.
Below are their submission guidelines. However, this is just an overview. It is always wise to get your information directly from the publication’s websites and read what they have published in the past.
HIPPOCAMPUS MAGAZINE
DESCRIPTION: They are seeking creative nonfiction. “We can tell you this: we like quirky, we like edgy, we like witty, we like gritty, we like smart, we like diverse voices. We root for the underdog, and we appreciate resilience. We like pieces that take us to new places, we like to be moved, and, most of all, we like pieces that stick with us. We’re interested in hybrid forms and unique structures (that work in an in online format.) We entertain science, nature, and travel pieces that offer a personal element.” – from Hippocampus Magazine’s website.
WORD LIMIT: Memoir Except & Personal Essay – Max 4K words. Flash Creative Nonfiction – Max 800 words.
PAY RATE: $40.00 honorarium for work accepted in the memoir, essay and flash categories.
SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS: Yes (But of course withdraw if you are accepted elsewhere.)
READING PERIOD: March through December.

MIDNIGHT & INDIGO
DESCRIPTION: “midnight & indigo is a new literary platform dedicated to publishing short fiction and narrative essays by Black women writers.
Our digital platform, midnightandindigo.com features a diverse array of voices that connect readers to content featuring strong female lead characters or a Black female POV; across the spectrum of experience – a new story is featured every week.” – From midnight & indigo’s Submittable website.
WORD LIMIT: Speculative Fiction / Horror: minimum 1, 400 words. Standard submission: minimum 1,500 words.
PAY RATE: $75.00 for short stories accepted in the literary journal. $50.00 for short stories accepted for online publication.
READING PERIOD: Speculative fiction/Horror issue: June 28, 2020. Standard Submissions: August 2, 2020.
