5 Short Stories I read In September 2023

There are five short stories I read in September 2023 that I want to share with you. I meant to get this post out sooner, but my wife and I are training for a marathon, and between exhaustion and applying edits to the latest draft of my novel, I have fallen behind. Also, I’m visiting New York Comic Con next week and travel arrangements have eaten up a bit of time.

The Five Stories

  • “THE GIFT” by Michael Kellichner. Published in The Colored Lens. A touching story set in a fantasy world. However this story is very grounded and focuses on relationships. It touches on a variety of different types of love.
  • “THE PROBLEM WITH THE UNEMPLOYMENT OFFICE” by Anna Stacy. Published in Uncharted Magazine. An extremely relatable story that follows a young man as he tries to get a job and reconnect with friends after being being abducted by fairies for seven years.
  • “LIFE WAGER” by Lucy Zhang. Published in Apex Magazine. The opening paragraph immediately pulled me in. The story follows the child of a mortal and a dragon who returns to earth and challenges others to games of mahjong, until she eventually faces the emperor himself.
  • “RECIPE” by Tina S. Zhu. Published in Fireside Magazine. An extremely short story told in a very unique fashion on what it takes to “make” a reluctant vampire hunter.
  • “BITE” by Emily Hope. Published in Fireside. This story follows a teacher in an all-girls school who has a troubled (potentially violent) student with a secret. The ending will stick in your guts long after you finish reading it.

Also In The Month of September

I listened to Wrath by Sharon Moalem and Daniel Kraus (it will also stick in your guts), read The Nice House on the Lake (vol 1 and 2) and The Department of Truth both by James Tynion IV. The Nice House on the lake was one of the greatest horror comics I have ever read. Finally, I watched No One Will Save You directed by Brian Duffield and starring Kaitlyn Dever. The director seems aware that his movie’s ending will divide audiences. Personally, I loved it.

Also, I can’t help but throw out a bit of self-promotion: my short story “THE LAST TIME MY TWIN DESTROYED THE WORLD….” was published in Uncharted magazine. You can check out the list of my recently published stories here.
